27 days to go, but I'm so excited I'm going to start the trip thread now.
5 week trip. 2 weeks in Thailand full of fun, laughs, nookie and sunshine. Three weeks in Ukraine full of no sex, radiation, and borst. You must say you like the Borst. Even though it's just veggie soup. Going to meet my internet catfish girlfriend, that's not going to go well. She like young Ukranian Angelina Jolie, me like old fat middle aged man, not going to happen.
I have to move a flight, only intended a week stopover, but the more I learn about Thailand the more I loved it, the more I learnt about the Ukraine the less I liked it. Both full of beautiful women, only in one country you get nothing. Nada, not a nibble. The other one is full of nibbles. I'll try and get some photos of the gorgeous Ukranians in Odessa, but that's all I'll get!
I reckon about 50 hours in planes, busses and taxis so I'm taking many amusements.
Packing this gear:
Tablet: There's a nice iPad 4 here with 4x the memory, possibly 2x the speed, bigger better screen but I'm taking an Asus Nexus 7 instead. So cheap if it gets stolen it won't be the end of the world, just buy another one. Small and light and fits in backpacks. Nifty little Tegra 3 chip that's nowhere as fast as an iPad 4, but still can impress. Filled with games for the long trips.
Game System: Playstation Vita. Fun incarnate. Until the battery pops on those 12 hour flights.
eBook Reader: Nothing. Think the Nexus 7s 9 hour battery life will be up to the job.
Phone: HTC One. HTC's new flagship phone. After the giant yawn that was the HTC One X, HTC grew some balls and took some chances. Stereo boom Sound, eye popping 1080p 4.7 inch screen, incredible unibody aluminium construction, and a weird camera. A 4.1(yes really) Megapixel camera. They call it UltraPixel technology, less sensors, but the sensors eat more light. So great for dark clubs and dark streets. Optical image stabilisation so any nob with shaky hands can take a good photo. As a 1080p camcorder it really shines. Love this camera, I make like Solid Snake and walk around my house at night using it as night vision goggles. Even I take good photos with this camera. Photos it takes are awesome.
Also has a built in FM Radio, exactly what you want on holiday, bit of local colour. Galaxy S4 can bite me. Must be careful not to flash the expensive phone around in front of the 2nd and 3rd world peeps.
Headphones: Inner ear Beats headphones, best for drowning out plane noise, women shouting "Hey handsum man, I take care of you", etc.
Buying a travel sim card from these guys: https://prepaidsimcard.holidayphone.com Unlimited Internet for 399 Baht for 30 days. That's 16 bucks. Sorted. God knows what I'll do in the Ukraine. They do have phones in the Ukraine though, and they're not carved out of turnips. I think.
Apps: Tapatalk, Photoshop Mobile, Trip Advisor, Amazon Kindle, Evernote, DropBox, Pandora, TuneIn Radio, Zinio, Google Maps.
Tempted to get some Bluetooth speakers for the hotel rooms. Probably won't.
Take your photos, DropBox automatically dumps them, delete them off phone. Yay.
US two pin plugs, again, god knows what I'll do for recharging in the Ukraine.
Games: Uncharted Golden Abyss, Metal Gear Solid HD, Metal Slug, Rayman Origins, Guacameleel, Escape Plan, Gravity Rush, AC III Liberation, Sine Mora, PixelJunk Monsters, Asphalt 7, Real Racing 3, Sentinel 3, Plants vs Zombies, ShadowGun, Dead Trigger, Modern Combat 3/4.
eBooks: Lonely Planet Thailand+Ukraine, lots of Hunter S Thompson, How to get the most Bang for your buck in Thailand, Pattaya Crazy. Bang Ukraine. Book on how to get laid in the Ukraine. Summary: You can't.
Passports: NZ One is current and good for Thailand, need a UK one for Ukraine which is on the way. If it doesn't arrive I spend 5 weeks in Thailand and make the catfish Ukranian eGirlfriend cry. Ops!
Luggage, cramming everything into one carry on piece of luggage. No waiting around for baggage. Teeshirts and shorts.
Flights and Hotels: In to Bangkok day one, going to crash at the hotel, then onto Pattaya for two weeks. Thinking apartment near Walking Street. Then onto Kiev, the eastern Ukraine shithole Angelina Jolie lives in, Odessa, Osaka, home.
First set back: NZ Credit Card has been defrauded, I'm down 1,700NZD. Can still make the trip though. Security on NZ Credit Cards is lousy. Might get my card back in time but lots of people have been defrauded apparently.
